Whitney is one of the Las Vegas Valley’s quieter unincorporated communities – an east-valley town strung along Boulder Highway, bordered by Henderson to the south and the resort corridor to the west. For visitors it’s mostly a gateway toward Boulder City, Hoover Dam, and Lake Mead, but it has a real local history and character of its own. This guide covers what Whitney is, what’s here, and how to get around it.

A Quick History: From “East Las Vegas”
Whitney was founded in 1931, when dairy farmer Stowell E. Whitney subdivided his ranch for sale as the new Boulder Highway was being built nearby to serve construction of the Hoover Dam. The Great Depression slowed early sales, but a post office opened the next year, and Clark County formally recognized Whitney as a town with set boundaries in 1942. For decades it was known simply as “East Las Vegas,” and many longtime locals still call it that – or the “Boulder District” (BD). When Interstate 515 was built around the community in the early 1990s, through-traffic on Boulder Highway dropped, but residential growth has steadily filled in the area since the 2000s.
Whitney Ranch & Parks
The Whitney Ranch area and its recreation center are the community’s recreational core – sports fields, walking paths, picnic areas, classes, and community events through the year. It’s among the better-maintained neighborhood park complexes in the east valley. The Pittman Wash Trail also threads through Whitney and the surrounding communities, offering a desert-wash walking and cycling route.

The Boulder Highway Corridor
Boulder Highway is Whitney’s commercial spine – the historic route toward Boulder City and Hoover Dam. Along it you’ll find local diners, Mexican restaurants, and neighborhood eateries that give Whitney its affordable, authentic, lived-in character. Just north of Whitney on Boulder Highway, Sam’s Town is a long-running locals’ casino with an indoor garden atrium, dining, and a bowling alley. Sam Boyd Stadium, the former home of UNLV Rebels football, also sits in the Whitney area as a notable east-valley landmark.

Gateway to Lake Mead & Boulder City
Whitney is one of the last communities before Boulder Highway opens into desert toward the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Boulder City. Lake Mead’s Boulder Beach is roughly 30 minutes from Whitney’s eastern edge, and Hoover Dam about 35-40 minutes – which makes Whitney a convenient, low-key base for day trips to the dam and the lake.
